Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology has
refused to take combined admission test with other public universities. Dhaka
University is also likely to take the same decision in its academic meeting scheduled
on 24 February,2020. Jahangirnagar University and Cittagong University are not
taken any decision yet.
The academic council of BUET in a meeting on Wednesday
evening unanimously decided to continue with its conventional system arguing it
the best way of selecting the freshers, the university director of students
welfare Mizanur Rahman told New Age on Thursday.
Dhaka University vice-chancellor M Aktaruzzaman said that the
deans and senior teachers had already given opinion for not to go for the
combined entrance exam system to ‘avoid possible troubles during the admission
process of the university having so many faculties and institutes.’
‘The opinion is likely to be approved in the academic council
meeting on February 24,’ he said.
Jahangirnagar University’s academic council on February 16
could not take any decision on the issue rather decided to see decisions of
BUET and Dhaka University, the university’s acting registrar Rahima Kaniz said.
A Chittagong University teacher said that the university
would follow the Dhaka University’s decision.
Vice-chancellors of BUET, Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar
University and Chittagong University told the February 12 meeting of the UGC
that they would inform the commission of their decision consulting their
academic councils.
The UGC and the University Council, a platform of the
vice-chancellors of public universities, last week decided to hold the combined
entrance exams from the next academic year as suggested by the president
Abdul Hamid to avoid sufferings of the students and their parents who needed to
go from one universities to another across the country for taking admission
tests.
‘We will proceed even if BUET and some other universities not
include themselves in the noble initiative,’ said University Council president
Kamal Uddin Ahamed, also vice-chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural
University.
The UGC chairman Kazi Shahidullah said that he would invite
all the vice-chancellors of the public universities on February 26 at his
office to get their decisions.
‘We will proceed with the proposed system in the greater
interest of the people despite reluctance of some universities,’ he said.
Last year, the central admission test was introduced at all
the agricultural universities and it was praised by all, Shaidullah said.
